Arroway Textures has graciously donated twenty (20) full resolution commercial texture sets to be given out to MrMaterials members. We have taken these texture sets and created materials for Max, Maya and XSI and will be distributing  one new set (full sized textures and the three platform materials) about once a week.

Speed up 3DS Max mr RPC translations on Revit FBX Imports:

Revit files with RPC entourage exported to FBX can become very very big, then take a really long time to import to 3ds Max Design. You can speed up this process by making an edit to an INI file used by the Custom UI and Defaults Switcher:

Locate your 3dsmax.ini file, for example C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\3dsMaxDesign\2010 - 32bit\enu. There should be a defaults folder there.

In the DesignVIZ.mentalray subfolder locate the CurrentDefaults.ini file and open it using Notepad or ascii text editor, do not use Wordpad or Word.

Locate the [Performance] section. There are two lines where you will change the value from 0 to 1.

- Don'tRepeatRefMag=1
- InvalidateTMOptimization=1

Save the file.

Use the Custom UI and Defaults switcher to reselect the DesignVIZ.mental.ray profile.

Restart 3DS Max, and try the import again.

If you can't find this file, search for Factory Defaults\DesignVIZ.mentalray folder and edit the CurrentDefaults.ini there. If the user folder isn't found, 3ds Max Design uses this location instead.

This trick should also speed up translation times during rendering. Based on information from Pierre-Felix Breton at Autodesk. I have not verified this at this time, use at your own risk.

MR Materials! is a free Mental Ray materials and shader repository. Created by Russell Thomas, Founder/CEO of 3DAllusions LLC with the help of Jeff Patton, as a resource for CG artist using applications with integrated mental ray or standalone version. Special thanks to Jared Martin and Harry Bardak for MatLab translataions into Maya and XSI.

Material Iconmental ray! has been used for years by high-end production software for the game and motion picture industry. For years it has been the default render engine for Softimage XSI and in relatively recent years an integrated option in Autodesk products 3DS Max/Viz and Maya. With the aid of the CG community it is hoped that a large repository of Mental Ray materials and shaders will be accumulated.

Material Labs are our preset scenes provided for your use in testing your materials and providing consistent sample images of that material. Leave the scene as is with the lighting and default camera untouched so that imagery created remains consistent.

Based on the strengths and weaknesses of similar sites, we ask that you work with us and use the naming conventions and process we will outline below:
